Training kit
Learners will need to purchase a suitable training kit (we can provide information and assistance with this), and training heads to practice on (available to buy here at the academy at reduced prices). We provide our Learners with a letter confirming their course, which allows them to open trade accounts with Sally’s, Dennis Williams, Barber Blades and Chris & Sons. etc.
How our training works
We start with theoretical training (some of which you can do at home) using HABIA’s training materials for individual units, the next stage for most units is practising on training heads. In addition to the practical training, we regularly hold practical demonstrations with industry professionals. When both Assessors and you feel that you are ready, you will then start performing services on real clients in the salon or barbers, under supervision. Throughout your course duration you will complete many client services which will give you a great deal of salon/barbers experience. We provide one-to-one tuition and additional support where required, we have additional resources and support for people with Dyslexia or other learning difficulties. We also provide individual learning plans, and progress is tracked with periodic reviews.
Course durations
It is our mission to train people to a high standard and be “salon ready” – ie. confident and experienced enough to work directly in a salon or barbers environment straight away upon completion. The time it will take is dependent on certain factors such as how frequently you can attend, how quickly you pick things up and if you can complete some of your coursework at home. Standalone NVQ courses can sometimes be completed in as little as 10 weeks with regular attendance, less frequent attendance will result in taking longer.
NVQs
National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are work-based awards that are achieved through assessment and training. To achieve an NVQ, candidates must prove competence to the required standard as set out in the National Occupational Standards which describe the competencies expected in the applicable job role. NVQs should not be confused with VRQs, which some providers offer but many Employers reject, because unlike NVQs they are largely theory-based and do not adequately demonstrate an individual’s true practical skills.
Choosing the right course
We offer accredited Hairdressing and Barbering NVQ courses, in addition to introductory, personalised, hair extension, 1-4 day, refresher and WAHL Academy courses; we want to ensure you take the best course based on your requirements. This is why we like to invite potential learners to arrange a visit to our academy for a tour and informal chat where we will discuss the best course options based on your existing qualifications and career ambitions. Contact us to arrange a time & date that is convenient for you.
