Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
At LAFHAB we seek to enable Learners to avoid duplication of learning and assessment for the purposes of awarding credit. This is achieved through Recognition of Prior Learning.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the recognition of non-QCF certificated learning towards a full unit or qualification. It is defined as: “A method of assessment (leading to the award of credit) that considers whether a learner can demonstrate that they can meet the assessment requirements for a unit through knowledge, understanding or skills they already possess and do not need to develop through a course of learning”
Regulatory arrangements for the Qualifications and Credit Framework (Ofqual/08/3726).
The implementation of RPL at LAFHAB prevents you from being repeatedly assessed for skills or knowledge you already possess in hairdressing or barbering, therefore any previous achievements (eg qualifications) or relevant experiences obtained through various environments (eg formal work in the industry), are applicable for RPL consideration as long as the standards and requirements detailed in the unit specification and assessment criteria are met.
Credit will be awarded once you have successfully demonstrated and evidenced to the tutor you meet the learning outcomes and assessment criteria of the unit. Therefore the use of RPL is acceptable for accrediting a unit, units or whole qualification without you necessarily having to complete the full course.
It is important to note that RPL is an alternative route to achievement, and should not be considered an easy option or shortcut. Full evidence must be produced for RPL, which is subject to the same assessment and quality assurance requirements & procedures as applied to evidence produced as part of a QCF course.
Credit Transfer (QCF)
Credits achieved through courses on the Qualification Credit Framework (QCF) may be transferred from a prior course.
If applicable, Recognition of Prior Learning and Credit Transfer will be discussed at your initial interview, you will need to bring all of your relevant certificates and other evidence of experience.
Continued Professional Development
The constant updating of skills is vital to success in any industry, this is particularly true in industries like hair, beauty and nails.
Continued Professional Development (CPD) is about keeping up to date with the latest treatments, products, techniques, equipment and business or industry developments.
If you are an Assessor or Verifier (IV/EV), CPD is compulsory, however it can be equally useful to anyone looking to sustain or enhance their career in hairdressing or barbering.
In addition to NVQ courses, as a WAHL Centre of Excellence we host WAHL workshops throughout the year. These events give you new and updated skills, and are HABIA-endorsed for CPD.
